Canvassing walk list template: the columns
A canvassing walk list template needs an address, a name, a short outcome code and a notes column, with one row per household, sorted by street in walking order. CanvassLite's walk-list article names address, city, state and ZIP code as required import columns, and name, phone and notes as recommended ones.
| Column | What goes in it | Source of the column |
|---|---|---|
| Address, city, state | Full street address, city and state | Required in CanvassLite's article |
| ZIP code | Formatted as text, not as a number | Required in CanvassLite's article |
| Name | Homeowner or voter, first and/or last | Recommended in the same article |
| Phone | Number for follow-up calls | Recommended in the same article |
| Notes | Free text about the door | Recommended in the same article |
| Outcome code | One code per visit, from a short list | This site's column; matches app statuses |

Start the 14-day CanvassLite trial →Outcome codes that fit on paper
Give each visit one code from a short list. CanvassLite's blog lists Not Home, Interested, Not Interested, Callback and Closed/Sale as the starting outcomes for sales projects, and says six to ten outcomes fit a phone sheet, with twenty as the maximum.
It also says to keep Not Home apart from Not Interested, since lumping them hides whether contact rate or pitch is the problem. Its statuses can be renamed, recolored, reordered and added, so the paper codes and the app can match.
Sorting the list into walking order
Sort by street, then house number. NationBuilder's help article describes an odd/even split so canvassers can stay on one side of the street, and CanvassLite's walk-list article describes walking down one side of a street and up the other.
In Google Sheets, sort the range by column, freeze the header row, and make the outcome code a drop-down list; Sheets rejects entries that do not match the list unless the rule is set to show a warning. Ordering a rep's whole route is covered in door knocking route planner.
Getting paper results back into one record
Results can be typed back by hand, or the next list can start from a CSV. CanvassLite says addresses can be pasted or uploaded as a CSV, and its blog says the app geocodes them onto the map and advises keeping each import under 10,000 rows.
Google says not to import files with more than 2,000 rows into My Maps, and the first row should hold titles. CanvassLite's terms allow a CSV export of campaign data at any time.
When an app prints the list for you
CanvassLite says it generates printable walk lists for volunteers without smartphones, and that volunteers join by invite link with just their name. Its pricing page lists Walk Lists on every plan, from $99 a month for up to 1,500 addresses, as read on October 30, 2026, and the best political canvassing app guide compares it with other campaign tools.
Walklists says its PDF walk lists carry maps, voter details, checkboxes and colored markers, and need no app; Starter is free for 1 user and up to 500 addresses. NationBuilder prints sheets from a list under Print sheets, in stock themes.
NationBuilder lists walk and call sheets on its Pro plan, while its FAQ puts them in the Political bundle, so ask which plan carries them. MiniVAN volunteers sign in with ActionID to reach walk lists. See CanvassLite vs Walklists.
CanvassLite's terms set limits on households and volunteers for each plan and cap the trial at 15 volunteers. A canvass of a few streets needs no app, only the printed sheet. A campaign that reprints lists every week should move to an app. A campaign can print its first walk lists from CanvassLite within the 14-day trial, with no card.
